Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a major honors show nears, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
